Started in 2002, the Hockeysmith South program was developed to offer an opportunity for adults who wish to learn or continue learning about the game of hockey.  In the past if adults had in an interest in learning to play hockey the only option was to join a recreation league, which is fun, but does not provide the supportive environment that new players or players returning to the game are looking for.  

Hockeysmith South offers instruction on individual skills like proper skating techniques, stick handling, one-on-one play, puck protection, as well as team skills like break outs, face offs, center ice re-group, and positioning (where should I be on a break out, face-off or re-group).  We have a wide range of players, from beginners just starting out, to returning players that maybe played in the past but haven't been on skates in years, to the intermediate player that does get on the ice about once per week but likes the structure and the additional practice as well as the opportunity to learn new skills from our experienced staff.  There are instructional scrimmages scheduled regularly to help students practice new skills in a game situation. 

Stats have shown that the top NHL players only handle the puck an average of 61 seconds per game, of course we are not playing in the NHL, but it gives us a good picture of how little the puck is actually on your stick during a game.  That is where our instructional format proves so helpful, it provides the opportunity for you to handle the puck for close to 30 minutes, or more, a session building your confidence so when you do get it in a game situation you will have increased confidence and know what you should do to be successful and supportive to your team.
